Following our post of 15th of September it is interesting to learn that the German Transport Minister has now come out with the opinion Tesla should not be advertising its assisted driving technology as Autopilot.
According to the Reuters news item below, the German ministry has actually written to Tesla requesting it ceases using the term "Autopilot" in order avoid incorrectly setting driver expectations.
A spokesperson for Tesla has since reiterated that it sees its use of the term as justified and no different from the long-standing use of the same term in aviation, where it is well understood that Autopilot reduces driver workload and can add an additional layer of safety over and above purely manual driving. Tesla is maintaining the position that it's instructions to drivers have always made clear their attention is required at all times.
German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt has asked Tesla (TSLA.O) to stop advertising its electric vehicles as having an Autopilot function as this might suggest drivers' attention is not needed, his ministry said on Sunday.
