In keeping with Apple's notorious desire for secrecy it has taken until today to officially confirm that it plans to develop self-driving cars.
It's long been rumoured that Apple have been working on autonomous technologies and today's announcement is simply confirmation. The really interesting is part of the story is however that the statement accompanies a letter from Apple to the US highways regulator, which provides focus for the fast developing technology and its regulatory framework.
With Apple lending its considerable weight to the regulatory debate, it will be interesting to see if Apple's intervention can push forward the regulatory process and in particular the complex areas of data sharing and data privacy associated with autonomous technologies.
